ROARing Cougars enjoyed celebrating 100 days of school on Friday. They traveled to different stations exploring with the number 100. They were able to choose from different fun and engaging stations. Students had fun completing math centers, writing and art station, Lego building, cup stacking, and reading books about the number 100. It was a fun day, complete with a photo booth!
KIndergarten ROARing Cougars followed the steps of the design process as they completed several mini-STEAM stations. Some of the stations were build your own spider web, build the tallest fence that will hold the most pumpkins, and a creepy crayon challenge where they had to build a structure that would hide the most crayons. Students followed each step of the design process and completed quick writes after each rotation. What a great way to incorporate creativity, communication cooperation, and creativity!
First grade ROARing Cougars researched the 3 different types of communities and made their own community helper non-fiction books. Each group researched a different type of community and built a model replica. They included many of the same things that can be found in each one. They researched a community helper in the medical field using nonfiction books and kid-friendly websites. They included many of the nonfiction text features they have been learning about. There were many parents and special guests in attendance. The showcase was quite a success!
Kindergarten ROAR students enjoyed exploring with pumpkins. The students incorporated art by doing a self-directed drawing, writing different attributes their pumpkin had, math (measurement), and science (sink/float). Students were actively engaged in the hands-on activities.
ROAR first graders expanded their learning of different topics while enjoying a book tasting. They traveled around Ms. Lindsay's Book Cafe and "tasted" different nonfiction books on different topics. Each student completed a quick write about each topic they read about. Students began their research project on communities and community helpers the next day. Students will write their own nonfiction books, complete with text features.
The ROAR students celebrated Dot Day on September 15 by completing many art and math activities based on the popular story. Everyone worked hard on their 5 Cs of creativity, caring, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Such a fun day celebrating a fantastic and wonderful story!First graders completed their first creative challenge this week! They listened to the story Not a Box and then made their own not a box out of recycled boxes, paper, and other classroom craft materials. Students went on Gallery walks to check out other classmate's creations, and then created their own flip grid video. Everyone is looking forward to a great year together! :)
Kindergarten and first grade ROAAR students have had a great year of learning! Kindergarten students enjoyed a STEAM challenge based on the 3 Little Pigs story. They had to design and build a house using various materials strong enough so that the big bad wolf could not blow it down. Some groups were successful in the challenge, while other groups had fun trying! First grade students wrote about their summer plans. They were able to review correct sentence structure and blending sounds together. They have really become great writers this year!
First grade ROARing Cougars completed a spring themed challenge. Each group design and constructed their own rainbows out of pipe cleaners and Play-doh. They tested the strength of their rainbow by counting how many "gold coins" it could hold. Many groups were able to improve their designs after each test. The average "gold coins" held by each group was 18. The challenge was fun for all and really got us looking forward to St Patrick's Day!
ROAR Kindergarten students completed a STEAM challenge called "the floor is lava" challenge. Each team was given plastic cups, craft sticks, index cards, and 40 plastic bears. The challenge was to stack as many bears as possible on the bridge to keep them safe from the hot lave below. The groups were very creative with their bridge construction. Each group was successful, and designed their bridges lots of different ways. They worked hard using their 5 Cs of collaboration, communication, creativity, caring, and critical thinking.
