This week, ROAR kindergarten students spent a few days at the 10x12 construction company learning all about building and constructing numbers with 10s and 1s. Each student had their own supplies, complete with hard hat and nametags. They visited a different "job site" each day. They built numbers with base ten blocks, learned about using blueprints to build houses, and even wrote number reports. It was a week full of learning all about different types of construction and the different jobs construction workers do.
The kindergarten and first grade ROAR students are experiencing a rather cold winter so far here in South Carolina! They "celebrated" and "honored" these very Wintery days by completing some snowy STEAM challenges. They designed and constructed snowball towers made from marshmallows and toothpicks. They also planned and designed winter habitats to keep some furry friends warm and safe during the cold winter months in a hibernation challenge. Each group used creativity, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration in small groups. Now that we have had a few snow days, we are ready for Spring!
The first grade ROAR students have been learning about how animals survive in the colder regions of the world. Each student choose a different arctic animal to research. They used close read passages and informational books to find new information about their topic. After completing their planning sheets, they typed their new information into a Google slideshow. Each student added non-fiction text features (table of contents, photographs, and captions. Finally, each student was able to choose to make a non-fiction book to take home, or record their voice using mote and create an on-line book to share.
ROAR classes enjoyed participating in several Grinch themed activities during Grinch Day at the Creek. Students reviewed math skills previously taught, learned about the different states of matter using candy canes, and practiced engineering while cup stacking. Students were all dressed in their holiday attire all the way to there reindeer antlers! Lots of fun and learning were had by all!
First grade ROAR students completed their study of the 3 types of communities. After completing their models, they were put on display in the library for all of BCE to see.
Many parents, teachers, and other students were very impressed with each one! They are looking forward to phase 2 of our project. Each student will be researching a community helper in the medical field and making a non-fiction book to showcase their new learning! The kindergarten ROAR students had a great time exploring with pumpkins. They used small pumpkins to review various science and math skills. They observed their pumpkins and used their 5 senses to describe their pumpkin. They measured their pumpkins height, weight, and counted how many ribs it had. Each student did a self-directed drawing of a pumpkin to integrate art. Finally, they got to take their pumpkins home and decorate them for Halloween!
The first grade students in ROAR are working hard on their community models. They have been using several AVID strategies for brainstorming and collaborating. The project began with students participating in a World Cafe' lesson. Students read non-fiction passages and highlighted new information. The students then brainstormed new information using photographs and books. They wrote notes on posters, then added what they needed for their models on a t chart in their AVID journals.
The ROAR students had a great day completing Superhero themed math activities, STEAM challenges, and critical thinking challenges. They worked hard using their 5 Cs of character and even dressed like their favorite Superheroes! They even had a visit from past ROAR students who came and led some of the games. What a great day of fun learning!
Students in Ms Lindsay's ROAR classes enjoyed listening to the story The Dot. It is about a little girl who found her creativity in very interesting ways. Students incorporated math (creating patterns, subitizing and number arrangements), critical thinking, and creativity with STEAM challenges. A fun day was had by all students, as well as Ms Lindsay! :)
The second grade ROAR students completed their first critical thinking challenge of the school year. They had to build the tallest tower possible just using pencils and clothespins. They followed the design process as they completed the challenge. They recorded the height of their tower, and took a gallery walk to view their classmates' towers. They did a great job complimenting classmates and asking great engineering questions. This was an awesome first challenge of the year for these super engineers!
